I have gotten several e-mail about owls and whether it is a good idea to take young owls from the nest if they have been abandoned.
First off, you must be certain that they have abandoned! Not just left for a while for the adult to find food and bring it back. As the young owls get older, the adults stay away for longer periods of time. And in some cases there may be only one adult that is trying to feed the young so the time the nest does not have an adult around may seem long to you, but not to the owl. Observation is the key here. And I do not mean just an hour or so. Plus you will need to conceal yourself and remain a good distance away. The adult will not likely come back to the nest if you are close to it. The real question that needs to be answered in a very responsible way is are the young owls abandoned or not? It may be a good idea to leave the are, make a few calls and see where you would take the young owls to before returning to the nest area. If it finally beomes clear that the nestlings had been abandoned, probably due to the death of the parent, then you should get someone that knows what they are doing to come with you and rescue the birds. Call your local pet stores and vet clinics and find out who would be able to help. Plus check out some of the links I have listed for more information. Good luck. Go To Page: 1
