More on the Owl.

My appreciation of the burrowing owl has been cultivated over a period of years. Yet often, when asked what exactly IS a burrowing owl, I am reminded that many of you have never heard of one much less seen one.

What a treat you have missed.

However, if you take time to look through the links I have set up you will not only see some pictures of burrowing owls, but you can hear some of their calls.

Some people think that a burrowing owl is an owl that makes it home in the hollow or hole in a tree.

No, that is not correct. All burrowing wols tend to nest in holes in the GROUND.

Strange but true.

What else is true is that the numbers of burrowing olws is being reduced almost daily.

Please read an article I wrote on that subject a few weeks ago.

One other way the numbers are being reduced is by well meaning people that cature them.

Owls do not do well in captivity at all. Unless they are hurt I urge you to leave them alone!

Observe them from a distance, yes. But bother them, NO!

We may indeed delight in this wonderful little creature best by leaving it to live it's life without our intervention.
