Crab Apple fruits
Welcome to our second part of Autumn Trees in the Garden. Here are some more of these wonderful trees that grow right around the world.

The Rosaceae family is widely distributed and includes the Cotoneaster, Hawthorns, Apple, Crab apple and Photinia species. Many of the garden Crab apples are grown for the beauty of their flowers or fruits.

MALUS floribunda - Japanese Crab-apple (Japan) Crab apples are among the hardiest and easiest to grow the spring flowering trees. Height 4 metres x 4 wide. Deciduous small tree, slow growing, Bright green foliage turns to yellow/orange to red in autumn. Flowers in abundance, single white with pinkish centre, some fragrance. Prefers moist to well-drained soils with good summer watering.

In 1941 a forester In Mo-tao-chi, a remote part of Szechwan province In China, noticed a large old conifer with buttressed roots growing by the side of a road. It was unusual In that it was deciduous - the lovely, feathery, light green foliage turned reddish brown in autumn, then fell. The local people called the tree Shul-sa, which means "water fir". It turned out to be Metasequola, a tree thought to have been extinct for millions of years.

METASEQUOIA glyptostroboldes - Dawn Redwood (China) - Height 15-20 metres. A magnificent, tall deciduous shade tree for large gardens. Fern-like foliage is bright green changing to pink-gold in autumn. Red-brown bark and cylindrical pendulous cones. Prefers acid soils and regular moisture. Sun to part sun. Grows approximately 1.2 metres annually in rich soils. ==========================================

The Oleaceae family contains the Ash (Fraxinus) species which includes the richly red autumn turning foliage of the Claret Ash.

FRAXINUS excelsior 'Aurea' - Golden Ash presents glorious leaf colour from the other end of the colour spectrum. Height 6-12 metres x 6-12 metres wide.

Deciduous, spreading, hardy specimen tree with attractive yellow bark and lime green foliage turning yellow in autumn.

Sooty black buds in winter.

Will flourish under very warm conditions in sun or shade.

Has a deep rot system and prefers rich, moist soils. Grows approximately 45 cm. per year.

The Hamamelidaceae family of deciduous and evergreen trees and shrubs are distributed widely in temperate and subtropical regions yet are unknown in the wild throughout Europe, most of South America and Africa. The Liquidambar and Persian lronwood from this family present an incomparable range of autumn tonings.

LIQUIDAMBAR styraciflua - American Sweet Gum (Eastern USA Mexico). Height 10-20 metres x 4-10'metres wide. Very hardy, frost tolerant, deciduous tree with upright pyramidal form.
