Autumn Trees in the Garden

AUTUMN TREES

Some of the most well known catkin bearing plants belong to the Birch (Betulaceae) family which includes Hazels, Alders, and Hornbeams.

BETULA pendula -Silver Birch (Europe and North Asia) is one of the most popularly planted specimens.

Height 6-15 metres x 5-8 metres wide. Deciduous medium-sized graceful tree providing light shade in summer with leaves turning yellow in autumn. Has one or several main trunks.

Bark is brown when young but gradually develops to silvery-white papery-bark when mature.

Hardiest of all broadleaves. Will grow in sun or part shade and is tolerant of dryness.

================================================== For sheer variety of gloriously coloured specimens, many of which can be grown in smaller gardens, it is hard to go past the Maple (Aceraceae) family.

ACER palmatum - Japanese Maple (Japan) is a favourite garden specimen. Height .6 metres x 3-5 metres wide.

Deciduous small tree. Pale green leaves turn orange to deep red in autumn.

Prefers moist to well-drained loam with good summer water.

Full sun to part shade. Protect from hot dry winds.

Grows approximately 60 cm per year.

Some very familiar deciduous and evergreen trees belong to the Fagaceae family, including the Chestnuts, Beeches and Oaks. There are hundreds of different oak species alone ranging from the enormous Turkey Oaks that can grow to 35 metres, to the Cork Oak, whose bark is harvested for wine bottle corks.

QUERCUS palustris - Pin Oak (South- eastern Canada and Eastern US) shows glorious red and scarlet leaves in autumn. Height 10 metres conical shaped tree. Deeply lobed glossy green leaves.

Some stock tends to hold their dead leaves in winter. Check with your nursery and purchase stock that shed them.

The Pea (Leguminosae) family includes Australia's Wattles together with Laburnums and Robinias, the Judas Tree and Pagoda Tree.

GLEDITSIA triacanthos - Honey Locust (North America).

Height 15 metres, is an attractive open crowned spreading tree.

Prefers moist well-drained soils.

Suitable for windbreaks, summer shade and fodder.

Fast growing. Leaves turn to golden yellow in autumn.

The Magnoliaceae family includes the beautiful flowering magnolia trees. Most species are found in Eastern Asia from the Himalayas through China to Japan and in Southeast Asia to New Guinea.

LIRIODENDRON tullpifera - Tulip Tree (North America) is noted for its flowers and autumn foliage. Height 10-20 metres. Deciduous, upright conical tree of perfect form, making an excellent shade tree. Saddle-shaped leaves are mid-green turning to clear golden-yellow in autumn. Tulip-shaped flowers are yellow-green with prominent gold stamens in spring. Has a deep root system and prefers deep, fertile, free-draining soil in full sun. Tolerant of part shade.
