Earlier this year in March, the state of Victoria in Australia held its Annual Garden and Flower Show, which is a wonderful spectacle, attracting visitors from all over the world. I've had the opportunity through the years to be fortunate enough to be able to attend, look and enjoy the floral art and photograph some of the wonderful displays and spectacles put up by gardening experts and companies.
Every year, we make it a family affair, going along with some of the family and grandkids, with a picnic lunch and meeting old friends there. The show gets better each year with new exhibits, great displays, ideas, products and often sample freebies (getting less each year though) which tempt the eager onlooker. One of the highlights for us this year was the spectacular house on display built of straw and concrete. Standing back to view it, it was just like a normal house with a small fence, windows, pot plants and everything else you would expect to find. The amazing difference was that this house was built of bales of straw rendered with cement and designed to look like a Mexican hacienda. I took some nice photos with my daughter Sue-Anne and little grand daughter, Paris, standing outside the house. Notice the good use of color and plants. The Flower and Garden Show is staged both outdoors and indoors. At present we will wander around outdoors and look at some of the wonderful displays before we venture inside. This day, the weather is perfect, the crowd is large but comfortable to walk through and the atmosphere is terrific. It is great to be able to stop and look at a display and discuss the pros and cons of it with whoever is standing next to you. A really exhilarating feeling and experience. Outside, the plants and flowers are amazing, magnificent, healthy, and some are truly gorgeous; and the best thing is that most are for sale in some form. I always come home with some wonderful Dwarf Irises and roses. I never get home without buying pots, or pieces of some of the amazing succulents on display at the Springavle Garden Centre. I also managed to get a really nice mixed lot of Lilium bulbs, which I am looking forward to seeing flowers of these later this season.
