Garments from the Garden
The whole show was an exciting exhibition for the general public or garden enthusiast to enjoy the fruits of the many exhibitors who take part every year. Gardening companies and individuals set up their marvellous displays in the grounds outside, also you can stroll around and buy just about any kind of plant conceivable. Then, if you can't take it home with you, it is possible to order what you want or visit the respective companies. Being a fanatical plant collector myself, I always delight in the wonderful displays of plants, succulents and cactus, also the amazing Bonsai plants on display. This year I came away with a wonderful selection of succulent pieces and a few Bonsai starters to keep me busy for a while. As well, there is always the Lilium grower who sells packets of mixed Lilium bulbs at a most reasonable price and although un-named, I always look forward to seeing what flowers appear the following seasons as they grow.
Definitely, this show is a must to visit if you are in Melbourne (Victoria Australia) during March; I always make a point of putting a whole day aside to visit the show. Inside the great hall, there are displays and competitions in flower design and arranging; as well as the competition for the best floral garment made of leaves branches and flowers. The theme this year was autumn and the displays were just so magnificent as they are every year. I have taken on the task of photographing the displays and have done so for the last five years. The displays this year were excellent and captured the true feeling and spirit of autumn. The designers involved have much talent and let their imaginations run away with weird and wonderful ideas to fascinate us. The main hall is always abuzz with people and the air of excitement is always very high. There is a section where you can buy bunches of flowers which range from Australian natives to many of the hard-to-get exotics that come from the warmer states like New South Wales and Queensland. As well, the displays around the great hall include full dining settings made from fabulous flowers, garden settings, household rooms; viewers are held spellbound by the ideas that have come to fruition not only in the minds of the designers but for all to see.
