5 Checks for Exterior Spring Maintenance

Spring is in the air! But there are some things that you might want to check around the house before summer sets in. Here are some checks that you should perform around the house to ensure your safety and comfort in and around your home.

Check #1 - Roof and Flashings

Visually inspect your roof to see if any shingles are loose or broken. Climbing a ladder to inspect the roof is also a good idea. Look for any mold or mildew (green patches). Also look for any plant growth. All these are potential problems.

Also check all the flashings around the house on sills etc for breakages, deformations etc. Any faulty flashing should be promptly replaced.

Check #2 - Gutters and Downspouts

This is an easy yet critical check that you can perform. Make sure that your gutters and downspouts are free of debris. Clearing out any clogging should be done before the snow begins to melt. This can usually be done with high pressure water. Leaves etc can be removed by hand. Otherwise a professional cleaning should be scheduled. Also make sure that all the gutters and downspouts are in good condition. Check that they are in proper alignment and allow water to drain freely.

Check #3 - Air Conditioner

Visually inspect the air conditioner unit. It is a good idea to read the Instructions Manual for any maintenance procedures that you should perform. Cleaning the condensor coils, and changing the air filter will help save on those expensive electricity bills this summer.

Check #4 - Decks

Go around all parts of your deck and patio to make sure there are no loose members, no rotting wood etc. This is a good time to fix broken members and to replace rotting wood pieces. Repainting may also be needed. This is avoid any accidents while your children are playing on the deck.

Check #5 - Satellite Dish

If you have a satellite dish or TV antenna attached on the exterior of your house, it is a good idea to check that it is securely anchored. Also check for cracks around the dish for possible leakage points. This also applies to any other exterior fixtures on your house, like lights, signage etc.

Next time, 5 interior checks will be discussed. So see you then.
