Anchors and Fasteners For Your Home

Here is a handy guide that will help you in finding the appropriate fastener and anchor for your next home improvement project. This article will be useful whether you are planning on adding extra shelves or hanging a beautiful painting to brighten up your wall. Below you will find descriptions of where to use the most commonly available fasteners and anchors.

Plastic Anchors

These are one of the most popular fastening mechanisms available. These anchors are suitable for brick, concrete, solid block and stone walls. They come in various sizes (for different sizes of screws), and in various colors and shapes. The anchor is hammered into the wall and then a suitable screw is driven in. This enables the anchor to expand and hence provide the required grip. These anchors are used with sheet metal and wood screws. They are suitable for light loads.

Toggle Bolts

Use these for hollow masonry. The toggle is pushed into the hole which you drill into the wall. When the toggle goes through the wall's thickness, it opens up its wings and secures the fastener. These are suitable for light to medium loads.

Lag Shields and Screws

This pair works together and can be used in concrete and many other masonry wall materials. These are stronger than plastic anchors.

Concrete Screws

These are very popular due to ease of installations and are known through a variety of trade names. These can be drilled into concrete, block or brick. They are held in place by the friction they produce while being driven-in.

Drop-in Anchors

These are internally threaded metal anchors which remain flush with the top surface. These are good for heavy loads.

Hammer-Driven Anchors

These are for use in brick, concrete and stone walls. They look like a nail with an enlarged tip. This enlargement holds the nail in place when it is driven into the wall with a hammer.

The list above is the most commonly used fastening devices and one of these will usually suffice for the task in hand. As a quick reference, toggle bolts
