  • Amount of Daylighting Required: will dictate the size of the window. In cold areas, sunlight needs to be maximized, hence entire building facades are converted into windows. But in hot climates, direct sun is too bright and causes glare. Also due to the heat, small windows are the norm.
  • Privacy: this very personal variable can affect all aspects of window design.
  • Esthetic Appeal: Windows are crtical in the design of the building's facade as well as the interior. So windows can have a very long-lasting effect on the design and use of every space.
  • View: another personal factor which can determine the size and type of window
  • Culture and Tradition: Windows often symbolize the architectural language of a civilization. Hence window shapes, materials and locations can all be affected by the cultural dictates of a people. Traditional building sciences like Feng-Shui and Vastushashtra can also affect window design.
  • Some other utility-based factors are:

    • Ease of use
    • Durability
    • Longevity
    • Construction quality
    • Replacement cost and ease
