Selecting A Flooring Material - Part 1

This article will focus on flooring options available to the homeowner. Here you will find a quick guide helping you select the right option for you. Links to good online resources and an overview of products should make the choice of what flooring to use very simple. The flooring options covered in this article are hardwood floors, ceramic and natural tiles. The discussion is in point form to facilitate an easy and informed decision.

Hardwood Floors

  • Advantages:
    • Elegant.
    • Adds warmth and beauty.
    • Biodegradable
  • Maintenance: Relatively low maintenance, though proper care is needed.
  • Installation: Quick and simple. Can be used soon after installation
  • Cost: Moderate. (But can depend on the type of stain and flooring selected.)
  • Variety/Availability: Large variety of stains, traditional wood and pre-finished varieties available. Popular stains are red oak, white oak, maple, and pine.
  • Disadvantages: Not suited for areas where water damage can occur e.g. bathrooms.
  • Online Resources:

Ceramic Tiles

  • Advantages: Very durable. Size of tile and grout in between should be considered when planning and designing the flooring patterns and effect.
  • Maintenance: Very low maintenance required. Can be cleaned with a damp cloth.
  • Installation: Cannot be used before the setting period.
  • Cost: Depends on type of tile, color etc. Can range from cheap to very expensive.
  • Variety/Availability: An astounding variety of colors and sizes available.
  • Disadvantages:
    • Anything breakable falling on this floor will break for sure.
    • Can be slippery when wet.
    • Feel cold in the winter months.
    • Generate higher noise levels.
  • Online Resources:

Natural Stone Flooring

  • Advantages:
    • Very upscale
    • Also, good for the country house look.
    • Can be used for a very plush interior
  • Maintenance: Special maintenance required for sealing, polishing etc.
