Step Two - choose Image from the menu bar, and Decrease Color Depth. Step Three - choose the colour depth you want to use. If it doesn't look how you want it to, use the "Undo" feature (Edit, Undo), and try another depth. I often use the "Custom" button, with 32 colours to get a good balance between size and quality. Step Four - use File, Save As to save your picture with another name (in case you need the original again!)

If you want to change the dimensions of your picture, Step One - load it into IrfanView as in Step One above. Step Two - choose Image, Resize/Resample Image. Step Three - choose the dimensions you want. If you want your image to remain the same shape (without being stretched out of shape) make sure you click the "Preserve aspect ratio" box at the bottom left. Now you can enter the height or width that you want, and the other dimension will change to keep the right shape. Step Four - use File, Save As if you want to keep your original file.

If you want to remove unwanted parts of your picture, left click on the image to get the select tool (a cross), and drag to the opposite corner to create a rectangle that is your "selected" area. Then choose Edit, Crop Selection. You can use Edit, Undo if it's not right, and try again. Save your picture when you've done.

Most other graphics programs will have an "optimise" function - for example, I also have an old version of Paint Shop Pro from http://www.jasc.com/ Use the Menu bar - Colors, Decrease Color Depth, to optimise your picture file.

In PhotoPlus you can choose "File, Export Optimizer" and then choose "TIF" as your file format. You can then use various options to optimise your graphic for the web. You can get a free copy of version 5 from http://www.freeserifsoftware.com/ which is what I use sometimes. You can buy the latest version from http://www.serif.com
