Riley to Stay? Spike to Leave? Buffy to ABC? Maybe.

Oct 20, 2000 - © Ellen Ross

When we left "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" at the end of the episode "Out of My Mind," aired on October 17, 2000, Buffy's relationship with Riley was becoming strained by the physical complications of his past involvement with The Initiative; Buffy seemed strangely reluctant to utter the words "I love you" to Riley, although she assured him that if she wanted a guy with super-powers, she would be dating Spike; and Spike was having passionate dreams about Buffy.

Are we heading toward the rumored Riley mid-season exit and a Spike/Buffy romance? Or is it all just a red herring, after all?

According to The Watcher's Web,

James Marsters (Spike) may be leaving "BtVS" after the tenth episode of the season, to film a movie. You may recall the rumors earlier that Marc Blucas (Riley) would be leaving "BtVS" permanently after episode eleven of the fifth season. If this was the original plan for the season, it may now have been changed.

If this rumor proves true, we can only wish James Marsters the best of luck in his movie career, and applaud our own good luck that we may not be losing Marc Blucas as Riley after all.

As John Cook points out in his comic-strip parody "Bluffy the Vamped-Up Stunner,"

just why is it that Buffy hasn't dusted Spike by now? Maybe it's time for a prudent vampire to get out of town while he still can.

The Watcher's Web also reports that Seth Green may put in a guest appearance or two as Oz on either "Buffy" or "Angel" later this season. (If it's "Angel," will he notice that Doyle is gone?)

At the same time, we're also hearing rumors that at the end of the fifth season, when the current contract for "BtVS" on the WB expires, the show may be shopped around to other networks, and that ABC might possibly be interested in picking it up. So far, everyone is denying all knowledge of any nibbles from ABC.

The story behind the story is getting more interesting all the time. Move over, "Grosse Pointe" and even "Passions" (sorry, Spike) - "Buffy Behind the Scenes" is the greatest cliffhanger of the season.
