The abrupt departure of Quinn remains a mystery, but one which fell at a time of ferment in the Buffy fan community. Not long ago, fan sites which offered transcripts of "BtVS" episodes and sound clips from the shows were shut down by a cease-and-desist from 20th Century Fox.

The fans are angry, and are getting together in alliances such as "The Buffy Bringers," which promises an organized campaign of resistance to the shutdown of "BtVS" fan sites.

It's not the best time to kill off the most popular character in a new and untried show.

Then again, Joss Whedon likes to take risks. Sometimes they work, sometimes they don't.

In the case of the much-mourned Doyle, the jury has lynching on its mind.
