In spring Ms Budget Travel's thoughts turn to packing . . . actually regardless of the time of year Ms Budget Travel thinks about packing. She's just a wee bit obsessive about it . . .

As many of you Gentle Readers know she spends an enormous amount of time thinking about all things travel and reclining on her chaise lounge with maps, guidebooks, and the catalogue from http://wwww.travelsmith.com cause she is a sucker for any garment with hidden pockets that washes in a hotel sink.

However, this week she is once more considering perfect packing --- a problem she considers slightly less solvable than the old one of how many angels can perch on the head of a pin. So she invites you to consider the dual nature of packing --- how improper packing can cost you money and how Proper packing can save you money

The budget minded traveller needs a few rules that have nothing to do with accessories or shoe bags. Ms Budget Travel has made numerous mistakes with her packing so she now knows the rules.

Never pack dry clean only garments unless you're only going away for a weekend.

Always take one garment in case the weather goes insane --- even in August take a sweater to the seashore -- it will save you scrambling around a strange place purchasing shorts or a sweatshirt at absurd prices.

Always take essential medications, prices in other urban areas can be a nasty surprise, not to mention the time spent scouting out a drug store.

Try to pack clothes that will wash and wear via sink-laundry.

Always carry one change of clothes in your carry-on (trust Ms Budget Travel on this one.)

If you are leaving your native language pack ample reading material, books in your native language rise in cost once they become foreign.

You really only need one pair of shoes for most adventures.

Excess weight in your luggage gets costly when you aren't traveling by car. You lose a lot of public transport options once you add another ten pounds to tote.

Forget the lead lined film bags and get your photos processed along the road whenever possible, it often does not cost more than at home and saves weight and the trauma of ruined film.

Forgo cute and expensive little toiletry sets unless you get one for a gift. Heavy duty zip-loc bags worked just as well for sheltering against spills.

A few fabric softener sheets between your clothes keeps them from smelling musty, and you can use them if you stumble into a laundromat.
