Put that fruitcake down now . . .

Ms Budget Travel assumes you're ready to sprawl on the sofa and burp a bit after a huge Christmas feast or perhaps pick tinsel out of your hair having awakened at dawn to the shrieks of children happily bopping each other over the head with gift-wrapped packages --- or not, maybe it's later in the week and you've barely recovered from Christmas and you're looking forward to New Year's Eve.

However, if it's Christmas Day and you're near North Carolina, you might want to run down to McAdenville (http://users.vnet.net/srankin/ ) a small town with Christmas light displays that have blocked interstate traffic for almost fifty years.

If you're looking toward New Year's Eve you've got a lot of options.

Ms Budget Travel thinks we should all stay home on New Year's Eve. Of course she also thinks we should all go to New York because she finds the thought of Times Square empty on New Year's Eve unbearably depressing.

Yes, Gentle Readers, Ms Budget Travel is just a tad confused.

If, however, you are part of the stay-at-home crowd that calls New Year's Eve amateur night you can watch what the rest of the world is up to by clicking on http://www.earthcam.com/newyears/2000-20... Ms Budget Travel is amazed by how the Internet has legitimized low-impact voyeurism.

In the New York area the celebration is still on, you can find out about it at http://www.timessquarebid.org/new_year/. If you are planning on New York City and haven't booked a room yet, be aware, December 31 is an expensive night for NYC hotel rooms. Ms Budget Travel just checked several web sites and the best deals she found were via the booking engine at http://www.USATourist.com and at http://www.Travelocity.com, on both sites she found a scattered sprinkling of rooms under (just) one hundred dollars and quite a few choices beneath one hundred and fifty dollars.

New Year's is one of the most popular times to visit Rio and while you should have already booked if you must see in 02 in Rio, you can find out about the festivities at http://riodejaneiroguide.com/newyears.ht...

Ticketmaster has a listing of New Year's Eve events in Canada that require tickets here http://www.ticketmaster.ca/attractions/h... If you are in Australia, you'll find an event listing for New Year's Eve at http://www.jaybees.com.au/nye/welcome.ht...

Last year Fiji was touted as a hotspot for Millennium madness --- something about seeing the sun first was supposed to be worth thousands. If you think 02 is the year you might make a visit to this piece of paradise, you'll find a lot of links and information starting at http://www3.virtualtourist.com/Australia... in fact, the entire Virtual Tourist site has great information about all kinds of places.
