Turkey Tracks . . .

Ms Budget Travel appears to have succumbed to cute headline syndrome. Please forgive her, it is her attempt to inject levity into a situation that more often than not has her collapsed on her chaise lounge unable to even lift her weary head to sip her soothing drink.

After yesterday's plane crash, Ms Budget Travel is aware that folks who were frantic about air travel earlier have now progressed to full-blown ain't-getting-me-on-plane panic. She's also vaguely in touch with reality so she knows that many Gentle Readers had probably planned to travel next week so they could eat turkey with relatives they only argue with once or twice a year.

Far be from Ms Budget Travel to tell you to stay home, or even suggest that a nice quiet weekend at a hotel replace the obligatory familial psychodrama. Ms Budget Travel will spare you the statistics that prove you are more likely to be stuck by lightening and eaten by an anaconda while riding in a mid-sized American car with odd numbered tags en route to the airport than you are to be in a plane crash . . . She will, instead, because that's what she does, give you a listing of land bound travel resources.

http://www.amtrak.com/ is Amtrak's web site where you'll find information on rail travel, schedules, and specials. (Some clever person in advertising is playing on your fears by placing "We'll get you there" as the center headline on Amtrak's home page.)

http://www.viarail.ca/ is the home of VIA Rail Canada. Their site is multilingual.

http://www.greyhound.com/ Greyhound buses depart 21,000 times every day to 3,700 destinations in the USA and Canada. Bus service reaches exciting places like Hartsville, South Carolina that don't have airports or train stations. Of course, if you are in Australia, you'll want this site http://www.greyhound.com.au/ for bus service and if your trip originates in Canada you might want to click here http://www.greyhound.ca/bus.htm. Of course, you could simply forget the entire travel thing and adopt a retired racing greyhound with the aid of these folks http://www.greyhoundpetsinc.org/.

Many Budget Travelers live rather frugally so that they can afford airfare, lodging, and museum admission fees when they venture out into the road. Ms Budget Travel her-very-own-self drives a rather moody vehicle that is not suitable for distance driving, if you do that sort of thing you may find that you must rent a car this Thanksgiving so that you can eat congealed salad while your mother asks why you aren't married yet.
