Kid Stuff . . .

For a variety of reasons, large and small, Ms Budget Travel has been thinking about travel with children this week . . . could be that Halloween makes her wish all the neighborhood children would travel elsewhere and leave her alone in blissful solitude with bags of store-bought goodies to consume as she reclines on her chaise lounge . . .

Or, it could have been inspired by the presence of her own child and their joint reminiscing about travels past --- the child of Ms Budget Travel thinks that counting change in the bottom of mommy's backpack to buy gas or getting on the wrong train in a country where one does not speak the language is simply part of growing up . . .

However, Ms Budget Travel was struck by an urge to visit websites and uncover the advice other folks have for that highly specialized form of travel

Travel with Children

Ms Budget Travel confesses that all the rules she has read for travel with children strike her as more difficult to absorb than traveling with a child. The first thing she was struck by was an across the board statement that "children don't like scenery." Parents were cautioned that children are not "see-ers" but "do-ers" and that parents should refrain from commenting on what they see outside of car window.

Ms Budget Travel needed a soothing drink when she read that . . .

Unfortunately, Ms. Budget Travel has also watched television this week and seen a rather grating Disney commercial where the snotty kids "helpfully" schedule their parent's days on the Disney cruise ship.

At that, Ms Budget Travel needed a really strong drink . . .

So, now, as is her wont, Ms Budget Travel will stagger about where angels fear to tread and provide you a bit of assistance in traveling with children.

1. "Children" as a subspecies of humans do not exist. You cannot find an activity or panacea that soothes a generic "child." Ms Budget Travel presumes you are acquainted with your offspring. She is quite certain that you know their foibles, failings, charms, likes, and dislikes far better than she or some anonymous magazine writer does. With that in mind, she assumes you know what they like and dislike and what level of activity they will tolerate. Some children actually enjoy passively watching the world go past a car window and have no desire to play with the icky bugs. Plan car or plane activities that suit your particular children.
