Keep in mind the sad truth. You can't always win. Sometimes showing up late at night with no room can get you a bargain from a desperate to book desk clerk. Other times you'll end up paying a premium price because it looks like there is no room at the inn.
The one make it easy on yourself suggestion I have is be certain you're pre-booked for a bed after an over night flight.
