WOW
You guys out there in cyberspace have a bunch of suggestions for traveling the 3-D world! This week's email was full of suggestions for Mr. Reader and his family. In the area of baby-on-board (or back) several Moms mentioned that you might want to pack a familiar brand of baby food commenting that baby tummies seem more sensitive to changes in diet than adult stomachs. Marcia from London wrote to say, "My partner and I took a lengthy trip with our little one and found that one backpack for gear and one for baby made it an easy journey. It does mean you must pack light but the benefit of hands free travel with a child can not be overrated." Several breastfeeding Moms pointed out the need for a nursing mother to carry water with her wherever she goes, stating that the physical demands of travel plus breastfeeding can result in rapid dehydration. An interesting around-the-world suggestion came from several readers who've done long wanders. Pointing out that changing cultures can be overwhelming after months on the road, several travelers said that the best plan was one that routes through some familiar places between new experiences. Over and over again I heard from folks who'd experienced traveler doldrums from constantly shifting time zones and cultures. John from Australia, a veteran of two round the world trips, said, "I found it gave me a needed break when my travels gave me the chance to visit places I'd seen before. After a month on the road it's restful to visit a city without having figure out where everything is." Another mom mentioned under packing baby clothes. During an around-the-globe-gallop "your child will change sizes." Several parents reminded me that Youth Hostels often offer laundry facilities, a must for traveling with tots. My pick for stellar advice came from a reader in the USA who offers an on-line suggestion. "Call or write the tourist office of every country you're likely to visit. Use your lead-time to gather as much information as you can about each destination. When you contact the offices mention that you'll be traveling with a baby - often there are specifics to traveling with a child that the tourist information people can tell you about." I'd like you to continue sending advice that I can pass along to Mr. Reader. This week, Ms. Budget Travel is off to Denver for the World Horror Convention. She's staying at the convention hotel, anti-budget luxury digs in downtown Denver where she'll have the challenging task of finding food and acquiring alcohol in a multi-star expense account style environment. Next week she'll let you know how to survive in an expensive hotel when you're a budget traveler. Go To Page: 1 2
