You Win some

Last week I'd just used http://www.hotelworld.com to book a single room in Salisbury. Not only did the Internet booking process go smooth as silk, there was no dispute about the price and the stay exceeded any reasonable expectations.

Despite finding the hotel listed multiple places and seeing different prices quoted on different web pages, there was no fuss regarding honoring the price that hotelworld's confirmation e-mail quoted.

If you are seeking crop circles, want to visit Stonehenge, or have an interest in English Gothic Cathedral architecture, Salisbury is the small city for you. You may also want to follow the ley line from Old Sarum to the tallest Cathedral spire in England or use the city as base for touring southwestern England.

Other areas of interest include Longleat in nearby Warminister, one of the most unique attractions anywhere in world --- how many Elizabethan baroque houses surrounded by lions, camels, and giraffes have you visited lately? Yeah, well did the current owner paint scenes from the Kama Sutra in any of the guest bedrooms? I thought not.

And, if you've already done the quickie bus tour to Stonehenge the surrounding countryside is full of better, older archeological finds. The Salisbury museum is an absolute treasure full of exhibits that make Stonehenge and Old Sarum understandable.

Add one other item to a list of reasons to go to Salisbury: the Grasmere Hotel.

Most Americans en route to the UK carry fantasies of traditional English hotels that include rooms done up a bit too precious, gorgeous garden views, and tea in the lounge. To their great disappointment they discover that to approximate the dream it will cost a substantial chunk of their vacation budget or that the charming hotel has dribbling water pressure, sandpaper towels, and a psychotic housekeeper who moves things around aimlessly or a view of a dustbin.

In the spirit of announcing a general miracle I advise any tourist who has stood in frustration under a shower that spits lukewarm water or discovered that "full English breakfast" can encompass cold toast and one measly pat of butter to forget all their Fawlty Towers nightmares and book a room at the Grasmere Hotel in Salisbury.

The Grasmere is a short easy stroll across a picturesque bridge to the cathedral, which houses one of the four existing originals of the Magna Carta. The hotel sits in an emerald green garden extending from a broad stone patio down to the riverbank. The views across to the cathedral are post card perfect. The comfortable lounge or the patios are pleasant places to while away a few hours. Tourists who've just been done to death by London crowds can reach Salisbury in 90 minutes via Britrail.
