Still Slipping Across the States

Our alphabetical virtual journey through the USA begins in Nebraska this week at http://www.visitnebraska.org.

The state site for Nebraska does a respectable job of making your critical budget-travel editor go, "Hmmm." Never having thought of any reason to go to Nebraska, I entered the site waiting for my eyes to glaze with boredom. I was pleasantly surprised to find a number of things to see and do in Nebraska. Not so many that I'm throwing dental floss in my backpack, but I certainly wouldn't mind passing through.

Nebraska has been the site of several significant archeological finds; most recently, the bones of a herd of pre-historic rhinos were unearthed. You can even visit a rain forest in Nebraska.

From the web page, you can order a free travel brochure. The lodging/B&B information is comprehensive with the exception of price-range listings. Within the web pages, you can move in a logical fashion - lodging and attractions link back and forth in a comprehensible manner. If you are attracted to a particular bed and breakfast, you can easily link to area sights and directions.

Nebraska also offers electronic travel information checkpoints at interstate rest stops throughout the state.

http://www.travelnevada.com does something that thrills my quirky soul. The Nevada travel home page does not open with a photo of Las Vegas. Perhaps assuming that the heavy-duty casino crowd either pawn their computers or are already singing Viva Las Vegas, they spare you the showgirls and tell you other cool stuff about their state.

From the table of contents, you can travel to cowboy country, Indian Territory, or Las Vegas. The web page is heavy on the golfing/hiking/biking/historic attraction information that is not as much a part of the Nevada image as slot machines and singers in sequins.

People planning a quick wedding can review a surprising range of options. The Vegas chapel, with an Elvis-impersonating preacher, is eternally popular; but Nevada offers a range of historical courthouses and scenic spots for a memorable wedding. With the ease of marriage in Nevada, they build quite an industry around marriage and can do the dream wedding as well as they do the drive-through marriage.

Http://www.visitnh.gov is one of those seasonally updated sites that provides accurate information on ski and snowmobile conditions for enthusiasts of winter sports as well as summer sun data. You can order travel information directly from the web.

New Hampshire's state office of tourism provides minimal information on lodging. However, hotels and bed and breakfasts are well linked to the site, so you can zap to a home page for almost any facility that interests you.
