Hi everyone! The weather is really cooling off, and we need to think of our little bird friends. BUT, you also need to remember that once you start feeding the birds, you must continue, they come to depend on it. This is a very simple and cute type of bird feeder, that even the kids will enjoy making, with you. Start by finding a bunch of large pine cones. Each pine cone will make a seperate feeder, so get a enough to last all winter. Now, all you will need is string (preferrably jute), peanut butter, and a bag of wild bird seed. Begin by wrapping the string throughout the pine cone to make a nice long loop, for hanging the feeder from. Next, generously cover it with peanut butter, making sure to get down into the openings as well. Then last but not least, pour your bird seed into a shoe box and roll the pine cone in it, until it is completely coated. The kids will enjoy making them, hanging them and watching for the little birds to come eat! This is a great feeder because you can hang them in such a way that the squirels can not eat them up. GOOD FOR THE BIRDS! I like to hang three to five at different levels in the same area, so it is attractive as well as beneficial for the birds. BUT, do not give up if you can not find pine cones! You can use anything that will withstand the weather and is not poisionous to the birds, such as; a piece of rolled up chicken wire, a wooden dowel (untreated), sticks bundled together, etc. Be as creative as you want with this, the kids and the birds will love it! You can also add crumbled up bread, crackers, popped-pop corn, etc. to your seed mix. Have fun and be sure to write us and let us know what new ideas you come up with.
TIP: To make your knit clothes, like tee-shirts, sweats, etc. last longer, not shrink or twist, and stay looking new. Be careful with your clothes dryer! Just tumble them at your normal heat setting for about two or three minutes, to remove the wrinkles, shake them and hang them on a hanger to finish drying.
