DIMENSIONAL STENCILINGHere I am again, it is another week and I have another fun idea. This idea will add a whole new dimension to stenciling. "DIMENSION" being the key word in that statement. I am going to just skip all the PROPER methods and go straight to the cheap ones. All you need for this project is your stencil, some lightweight spackling paste, a palette knife, plus your paints and brushes. Before we go any further, I want you to understand to only use LIGHTWEIGHT spackling paste, or if you have a really large project you could use LIGHTWEIGHT joint compound. There is a great deal of difference in the the look of the finished product, from using the wrong weight spackle. Now, there are a couple of ways to do this, use the method that you prefer. You could either mix your craft paint directly into the spackle or apply the spackle natural and paint it afterwards, you will get two entirely different looks, so I suggest you try a practice set to make your decision. Now that you have chosen your preferred method, prepare your spackle by either stirring it alone or with paint, BUT regardless I suggest you stir it well. Next, position your stencil and secure it, either with tape or stencil adhesive. With your palette knife, apply the spackle right over the stencil as thick as you like. You can use your spackle to make it seem 3-D, by applying it thicker where the objects should be naturally closer or larger. You can also use the paste to give it a very real look and feel. For Instance; flower pedals should be slighty wavey, a ball should be rather round, a cactus or a rock should be stippley, hair should have streaked lines, etc. You may use whatever tools are necassary to achieve the look you want. Once you have your spackle in place, lift the stencil straight up carefully, while it is still wet, clean your stencil up and wait for the spackle to dry. This is such a beautiful technique, that you may want to do stenciled painting on canvas to hang as art, or add that special artistic touch to virtually anything, let you imagination be your guide. Now, invite everyone you know over, to show off your new found talent! TIP: This is a very simple tip, BUT, it is a cookware saver. When you accidentally burn dinner, do not panic and certainly do not throw away that pan. Simply clean it the best you can in the sink, then sit it outside in the sun for a few days. Believe it or not, in a few days all that burn will turn loose and flake right off, to find a brand new pot underneath.
