BOOT & SHOE PLANTERS

© Terri Landrum

This is a fun project, that recycles those old boots and tennis shoes. Most of you have seen or heard of using old boots as planters, but what about old tennis shoes for those kids rooms or game rooms. First, I will explain the boot technigue. Simply, wipe off any loose dirt and spray with several coats of clear polyurethane. Next, stuff the bottom of the boots with anything you have on hand (even old newspaper) then set the pot right inside the boot. This look is generally used for a Western or Southwestern theme.

But think of the possibilities. You can use those old tennis shoes as well. You could either use the clear polyurethane spray or choose a colored spray paint. My favorite look, is to leave the lace undone and laying out loosely. They will become more rigid after spraying. You can also use baby shoes. Another thing to remember, is that you may either use live or silk plants. If you use live plants remember to place something under the pot to catch any water drainage. In the case of the baby shoes, you may want to glue them to a small decorative board, as a platform.

You will sure look at that old footwear before you throw it out now! Remember, that even if some of these projects are not for you, they will make great gift ideas. Everyone loves handcrafted gifts and it will save you a ton of money, so go ahead, get them made and have them ready for your next occassion.

'Til next week - Terri Landrum
