SHABBY SHEIK PAINTING TECHNIQUE

© Terri Landrum

Today I am going to teach you a painting technique that can apply to any project. This technique is to achieve that Shabby Sheik look of today. Certainly, you could go out and buy the kits, which can be very expensive, OR, you could use my method, then take your family out to dinner with the savings! For this project you will need at least two colors (preferably three) of paint, an old candle, and an ordinary putty knife. The paint can be any old house paint, craft paint etc. Though, it does need to be water based paint.

To use the three-paint process, randomly paint swatches of two of the colors of paint all over your project. Let that dry completely. Next, take that candle, and again, randomly rub swatches of wax all over the painted areas. Next, paint on your top coat. Use only one liberal coat. After that has thoroughly dried, scrape over the entire project with your putty knife. The paint will come off where the wax was applied. Now, you have a beautiful Shabby Sheik project! There is one more step if you choose. Simply take antiquing gel and rub all over, for a more distressed look. This step is strictly optional. You can purchase antiquing gel any place they sell craft paint, for less than $1.00. You could also put a top coat of polyurethane if you choose, though this is also optional.

Be sure to be back next week, for some more great, money saving ideas.
