FAUX BAMBOOHere I am again, this time with one of the truly great projects. This project is extremely versatile, as you will learn over time, by just applying it. For the purpose of writing this article, I am going to explain the PVC method. You will need PVC, hot glue, gesso or primer and stain. Begin by making the knuckles on the bamboo, using hot glue. Make a generous bead of hot glue around the PVC, let that cool off. Then make another, next to it, actually touching. In other words it takes two beads to make a knuckle. Repeat this over the length of the pipe, random distances apart. To give you an example, on a piece of one inch pipe, make the knuckle distance apart range from 9 to 12 inches. Once all of these have cooled off, you will make veins going down from each knuckle, about 3 around each knuckle, random distances apart and lengths. Then turn and make them going the other direction, off the same knuckles. Continue this over the entire pipe. The next step is to apply the gesso (or primer). Once that has dried, it will be time to stain it. You can choose any color stain you like, BUT the ideal color for bamboo is "Golden Oak". It is also preferable to use a stain with the varnish right in it, that will save a step; in addition it makes it streak, more like real bamboo. Now we will discuss some of the uses for this art. You could make any type table, from end tables to dining tables. You could make bed trays, shelves, picture frames, cabinet hardware and adornments, plant stands, etc. The list goes on and on. If you have a particular project in mind and have any questions, please feel free to enter a discussion below, I will be happy to answer your questions to walk you through your project. If you enjoy the bamboo look, this will become an invaluable technique; you will use this repeatedly for years to come. Next week we will learn a double framing technique. This is a very attractive way to display even the least expensive prints or art. This technique will make any art become suddenly very impressive. 'Til next week - Terri Landrum
