Budget Decorating And Crafting

Today's project is a great and very inexpensive way to make beautiful cornice boards for your windows, from cardboard boxes. That's right, cardboard boxes! The first step is to measure the window you will be decorating and add at least three inches to each side for your cornice boards. Or, should I say "Cornice Boxes", HA!

Next go to the grocery store "dumpster" to find the strongest boxes you can find in that size, and remember the size is going to be flexible in most cases. Also, keep in mind that usually one box will make two cornices.

Now, take your box home and cut out your cornice, using an exacto knife. Turn your box upside down (open side down)-the bottom of the box will become the top of your cornice. I suggest that you make it 8 to 10 inches deep and from 12 to 14 inches down. So you will make your (depth) cut across the bottom and down the sides. Then cut to make the length. Now you can make a template to create any design you'd like. The simpler the design, the better. Well, so far the cost of this project is a whopping .50, for that exacto knife, that is if you don't already have one!

Now, you are ready to finish your beautiful new cornice. Let's say you want to upholster it. First you'll have to pad it; the ideal thing to use is batting. You can purchase that at any discount store, very inexpensively. Though you can also use an old blanket. It makes great padding and it's a wonderful way to recycle "Old Stuff". Do not pad the top, just the front and sides, be sure to cut it to fit your design. You can use almost anything you have available to attach it. The ideal thing to use is spray adhesive, you can also purchase that at any discount store, BUT you also can use any type glue you have on hand, including hot glue or even white glue.

Ok, let's come in to the home stretch. Now, to cover it. You, of course can purchase your fabric of choice, OR you can also use this opportunity to recycle old curtains, an old bedspread, old sheets, etc. You should use glue to attach it, (wrapped around) to the inside, and staples or pins to hold it in place, as it dries.

After it dries you can adorn it with trim, jute, old rope, etc.
