2001: The Year in Decorating

The year 2001 is now gone, and like most years, it had a personality and flavor all its own. I'd like for you to join me as I take a trip down memory lane, recapping some of the decorating trends we enjoyed this year.

As 2001 began, the concept of living more simply was everywhere. New books and magazines were published on the subject, and many choose to streamline their lives and homes (including their decorating). Those of us who love Country decorating were introduced to "New Country" and "Country Modern" or "Country Minimalist" styles thanks to new books and articles that helped us realize Country doesn't have to mean clutter. We learned many wonderful new ways to inject Country flavor into simple decorating, and the lessons were a breath of fresh air for even lifelong Country decorating devotees.

Getting organized--a trend that's been in full speed for a few years--continued to be important for more and more people, as so many strived to create a balanced, orderly life. Throughout the year, we were introduced to furnishings and accessories that had staying organized in mind, like functional shelving, ottomans with interior storage, and closet systems that were smarter than ever. Magazine racks (whether they sat on the floor or hung on the wall) seemed to be everywhere, and they were more stylish than I ever remember them being in the past.

Some people took simplifying a step further and became part of the "downsizing" trend. People all over the U.S. who wanted to pitch their complicated lifestyles traded in sprawling abodes for quaint, compact spaces. If you were one of the many who faced decorating a space that is smaller than what you had previously, I hope you caught my January 2001 article Decorating Small Spaces. In it, I shared ways to make the most of the space you have while keeping it in style, all on a budget, of course.

As the weather got warmer, many people were itching to "lighten up" their decor. The comments I heard and e-mails I received on this topic resulted in my June article, Summertime Decorating. My own summer wrapped up with a major home remodeling project that tested my patience, my budgeting, and my decorating skills, but ended a wonderful success. Read about my Adventures in Remodeling, Part 1 and Adventures in Remodeling, Part 2 for pointers on creating a smooth remodeling experience.

Many tried-and-true decorating styles remained popular during 2001. Cottage style was as popular as ever this year, and in May, I shared some ideas for creating Cottage Style on a Shoestring. Romantic, Shabby Chic, and Contemporary styles were also popular this past year. But I think the biggest trend I saw this year had to be French Country decorating. I discussed how I achieved the look in my own home in July's French
