Budget Decorating Gifts for the Holidays

© L.C. Dumke

Are you tired giving the same old gifts at the holidays? Sure, everyone loves a basket of soap and bubble bath, picture frames, candles, candy and other old stand-bys. But this year, with just a little planning and effort, you can give anyone on your list a budget-conscious item that will help them decorate their home.

Before you begin searching for these items, there are two very important points to consider. First, you'll need to make a list of budget décor gift candidates. Your best bet is to select people who you know are currently decorating a new home or redecorating an existing space. Of course, decorating enthusiasts and crafters are also good choices, and are most likely to appreciate just this type of gift. Second, once you have decided on your gift recipients, think about their decorating style, and purchase or create décor items that will fit with that style. Although you might love it, you probably won't want to create a beautiful Country-style wreath for a friend who's style is strictly Modern. Although it's the thought that counts, the item might look out of place in your friend's home.

When it's time to go shopping, here are a few places to hit and some items you might find there:

Discount stores: Snatch up clearance-sale linens and personalize them. If you do needlecrafts, a little embroidery or cross-stitching can make simple hand towels into treasures. If you're not handy with thread, try using stencils or rubber stamps and paints (make sure you use washable fabric paints) and decorate pillowcases or entire sheet sets. (This is especially great for kids-just stamp on their name and surround it with flowers, trains or anything you think they'll love.)

Crafts stores: Yesterday at the crafting superstore Joann etc., I found some inexpensive picture frames made from unfinished wood. I'm planning to spray the frame with chalkboard paint, insert pictures of my kids, and give them to their grandparents for Christmas. They coolest thing of all: the kids will write messages to their grandparents right on the frame, and they can change the messages when they visit! Also don't forget the check out the silk and plastic flowers section this time of year. You can create wreaths, small arrangements and other gifts for anyone on your list that loves greenery. One of my favorite easy projects: purchase a Styrofoam topiary mold and cover it with glue and sheet moss. Place it in a small terra cotta planter and decorate it however you like.
