http://www.itihaas.com/ancient/ashoka-pr...
is a web site which provides a map of Ashoka's extensive empire. More astonishing yet, this web site offers an interview with the king. This is very readable and helps deliver the information in digestible doses.

Here is a sample:
As my 2nd and 7th rock edicts show, Dharma consists of 8 qualities.
These are:
  • Dana - Charity
  • Daya - Compassion
  • Satyam - Truth
  • Sancam - Purity
  • Sadhuta - Saintliness
  • Self Control - Self Control
  • Kritajnata - Gratitude
  • Dri Dhabhakita - Steadfastness
  • Susrusa - Obedience to parents
  • Apaciti - respect
  • Danam - liberalism
  • Samprat Pati - respect towards Brahmins, relations and elders

So we see an early adherence to Buddhist thought which made the rest of Ashoka's reign a model of peace and regard for human rights. He is still revered as a model of benevolent rulership 22 centuries after his era.
