The Hype Hits The Fan: Springsteen on Time and Newsweek 10/27/75It was 25 years ago this week that Bruce, a cult figure at the time, appeared on both the major newsweeklies. Soon after the release of the formible "Born to Run" album, TIME and NEWSWEEK chose rock's favorite Jersey guy as their cover-boy. In TIME, Jay Cocks sang Bruce's praises, while the NEWSWEEK article took a cynical look at the "next Dylan" hype that haunted Springsteen until his breakthrough. As for Springsteen, he was a bit embarassed at mainstream's sudden embrace. On the final night of the BORN TO RUN tour, he acknowledged the sweep with altered lyrics to "Rosalita": "Tell your daddy I ain't no freak, Cause I got my picture on the cover of Time and Newsweek." Twenty five years and thousands of magazine covers later, Springsteen has proven time and again that he is no freak - he is a reflection of the society around him and a major player in the music world.
