I've been catching up on some
series that are new to me - though some have been around for quite a while and
may be quite familiar to some of you.
1940's House :
A bit disappointing compared to similar efforts such as The 1900 House
and Frontier House, despite having a better than average family as
historical re-enactment guinea pigs. Still, the series contained a lot of
fascinating, if familiar information about the hardships faced by British
civilians during the Second World War. If only they could find a family for one
of the series that won't whinge and complain at every little hardship.
My Hero:
Surprisingly conventional, but still entertaining, comedy starring Father
Ted's Ardal O'Hanlon, as a super hero from another world who falls in love
with a London nurse he rescues from a deadly plunge into the Grand Canyon. While
no where near as good, in any respect, as Father Ted, My Hero is a pleasant
diversion featuring a good, if strictly operating on auto pilot, cast and a
brilliant lead.
Home to Roost:
Rather dated 80's sitcom starring the late John Thaw as a divorced
curmudgeon whose teenage son turns up at his door after years of estrangement,
looking for a place to live. Thaw is quite good with only slightly above average
material and it may take a moment or two to get used to Reagan/Morse/Kavanagh
playing such a relatively simple one dimensional character.
The Office

Inspired. A virtually instant classic, this skewed look at office life, starring
Ricky Gervais, is easily one of the funniest BBC offerings of the last
decade - once it gets it's deserved saturation in the US market I'm certain it
will attain massive cult success and a crap remake on NBC starring John
Larroquette and Carrot Top.
Phoenix Nights

From the fertile funny bone of comedian Peter Kay, this spin off from the
earlier That Peter Kay Thing chronicles life in a frankly dodgy northern
nightclub with a team of ensemble players the equal to any series on either side
of the pond. I can't understand why it takes so long for instant crowd pleasers
like this to get on the air over here.
