The 1940's House

Historical-re-enactment reality shows get the wartime treatment in this 2001 Channel 4 production airing in November on PBS. As with previous similar programs, such as The 1900 House and Pioneer House, a thoroughly modern family, in this case the five members of the Hymer clan, are placed in a historically accurate period setting. How will the 21st century family from Leeds fare living as a wartime family in Kent? Can a family used to all mod cons like color TV, video games and microwave ovens cope with Victory Gardens, rationing and Blackouts?

Well, since I don't recall Channel 4 being accused of fostering  domestic violence or cannibalism, I assume things didn't go too badly but I'm just as certain that the cameras will linger on every little hiccup in the lives of this family under a media microscope.

PBS's New York City affiliate WNET 13 is airing The 1940's House in multi-episode blocks beginning November 6th.

A History of Britain

There's more history on tap on, the aptly names, The History Channel as they air the third, and final, series of Simon Schama's flawed yet compelling A History of Britain. This third series picks up where the previous one left off and brings us through the 19th, 19th and 20th centuries. The, perhaps, overly ambitious series airs on The History Channel, beginning November 4th.

Towards the end of the month the complete A History of Britain will be released as a five DVD set.

Sister Wendy DVDs

Fans of Sister Wendy and her ever popular series of Art appreciation programs will want to pick up a pair of DVD box sets collecting the best of her, dry but generally informative and enjoyable commentaries on great art both in Europe and here in the U.S.

The Complete Collection is a four disc set that, if no longer complete, does contain the best of Sister Wendy's journeys through art's greatest masterpieces. Included are Story of Painting, Grand Tour, Odyssey and Pains of Glass.

To truly complete your Sister Wendy collection you'll want to acquire Sister Wendy's American Collection, a three disc set. While it's honestly not a patch on her previous work The American Collection does have it's moments
