Return of the Battle of the Britcoms
It's that time again. Time to revisit our favorite Britcoms and pit them against
one another to determine once and for all (or at least until the next time we do
it) which one is the greatest Britcom of all time!
The rules are the same as they ever were. Each fortnight I'll post five
nominees, five of the finest and most popular Britcoms ever made. Each day
you'll be able to vote for your favorite out of that group. At the end of the
fortnight I'll tally up the results with the top two vote getters marching on to
the championship round. Then I'll post five more nominees and the cycle will
continue until all the championship round spots are filled. Then the final
judgments will be made - doesn't it all sound exciting?
Here's the nominee list for Round One:
Are You Being Served: Easily one the most popular britcoms to ever air in
North America. Over the years the employees of Grace Bros have become like
family to countless viewers the world over. From the officious Capt. Peacock to
the lovably daft Mrs. Slocombe to the brilliantly camp Mr. Humphries. From pilot
episode to series finale Are You Being Served created an amiable, often
hilarious, universe that still draws new viewers into it every week.
As Time Goes By:Sentimental romantic comedy starring Dame Judi Dench
and Geoffrey Palmer as lovers reunited after decades apart. Sweet, subtle
and brilliantly written and performed.
Dad's Army: Arthur Lowe and John Le Mesurier lead a first
rate ensemble cast in this warm and witty remembrance of Britain's Home Guard
during the Second World War.
It ain't Half Hot Mum: Politically incorrect by today's standards but
still hilarious and wildly popular. From the creators of Dad's Army and
Are You Being Served.
The League of Gentlemen: One of the most bizarre yet wildly funny
britcoms yet produced. Fans have been religiously following the off center
antics of the denizens of Royston Vasey and last years DVD release is still one
of the best TV presentations on that medium.
BBC America's got a Britcom poll going on as well, though theirs only
includes those comedies aired on their own network.
