The Sins
BBC America brings the seven deadly sins to television with the American
premier of the Pete
Postlethwaite starring mini-series The Sins.
Postlethwaite plays
ex-con Len Green who shocks his friends and family when he decides to go
straight. Co-starring Geraldine James (Band of Gold) and veteran
thesp. Frank Finlay, The Sins has gotten good notices, particularly for
it's featured players, and should make for compelling viewing.
The Sins airs August 21
The Soccer Show
It's that time again - the British footie season is underway and BBC America's
brought back The Soccer Show. The Soccer Show
is available in two flavors - the preview show that highlight's upcoming matches
and the latest Premiership news and the Review show a couple of days later which
recaps the weekend' action with huge dollops of game action. Highly recommended
for soccer fans and essential for those who want to keep up with all the EPL
action.
Bowie Weekend
BBC America is going to the Diamond Dogs with an entire weekend
devoted to eccentric pop chameleon David Bowie. On tap is a full slate of
Bowie goodness from an excusive BBC America concert to a premier Later with
Jools Holland featuring the Thin White Duke. Bowie the actor can be seen in
the cult favorite The Man Who Fell to Earth and the highlight of the
programs, for me at least, will be the long awaited U.S. premier of Cracked
Actor, a mid-seventies documentary with a fine reputation.
The appearance of Cracked Actor is heartening - hopefully it signals an opening
of the vaults at the Beeb where they hold an extraordinary treasure trove of
programming - even considering the untold hours wiped over the years. The BBC
could easily dedicate a channel to 24/7 re-runs of classic programming from
their collection and while we'll never see the likes here in the US hopefully
BBC America will offer more classic programs as time goes by.
Catch Bowie weekend Saturday, August 18 and Sunday, August 19.
Wish list: It'll Be Alright on the Night
The program that, nearly, gave bloopers a good name. American audiences will be
all too familiar with the abysmal blooper specials and series presented by Dick
Clark and Ed "you may have already won" McMahon. These aren't those. Hosted by
Denis Norden these blooper shows picked the crème of the crop of on camera flubs
and screw-ups, mostly from British TV. Just as Black Adder and Fawlty Towers are
