Hidden Gems | Gormenghast DVD A bit truncated this week courtesy of a nasty case of the flu. Thank heavens my DVD
version of Gormenghast arrived to give me something to watch while I make
everyone around me's life a misery. Gormenghast DVD
The same series shown on BBC America and PBS but in
better quality.Easily one of the best min-series ever produced, though some may find it a tad eccentric for thier tastes.
Hidden Gems
While we all know that BBC America can be trusted to bring us a
full slate of British telly and that such networks as A&E, and PBS
can be counted on to represent blighty mighty well as far as boob tubularity is concerned,
you never know when you might find pockets of UKTV in relatively unexpected places. What
follows is just a sampling of the great British programming available across your cable or
satellite dial
HGTV - Bargain Hunt and HomeFront
The Home and Garden Network may not have our two favorite home (Changing Rooms)
or Garden (Ground Force) programs but they do have a couple of shows that suit fans though
the aforementioned down to the ground.
Bargain Hunt:
This series suits TheAntiques Roadshow's fans even better than
Rooms of Force does. Lovejoy-esqe host David Dickinson leads two pairs of
contestants through the sometimes delightful but often harsh world of antiques t auction
in this game show that combines the roadshow with a The Price is Right
mentality. Can the two teams, equipped with their requisite experts - often just as dodgy
looking coves as the host - use their allotted funds to buy the sort of collectibles that
will make them a profit when resold at auction.
The mixture of education (Roadshow style) and competition make for an engrossing v show as
you make your own judgments on what is and isn't going to impress the bidders at a real
life live auction. The overall effect is surprisingly effective.
Home Front
A fuller bodied home show then those available on BBC America, Home Front
combines Do it Yourself tips and techniques with real life renovation case studies. Home
Front is the perfect series for those looking for more than light entertainment
from their home shows - which is in no way a criticism of Changing Rooms
or Ground Force which I consider to be superior show overall. Home
Front is simply a more comprehensive, and less story-driven, design and
decorating program. The sort of program a bloke in the mid of a move/renovation situation
can appreciate a tad more than a simple personality based home show can offer.
