Tivo

Happy birthday to me! For my big day this year I begged for a Tivo and my pathetic whining was rewarded with a shiny new Philips model. Tivo is one of a breed of new consumer electronics known as Personal Video Recorders. With Tivo, or one of the other competing brands such as Replay, you can replace your old vcr with a feature laden computer device that will change the way you watch television. Like a vcr you can program Tivo to record the shows you’d like to watch at a later date but that’s where the similarities end. With a PVR you can pause and rewind live TV, search two weeks of tv listings complete with episode descriptions and set up a season pass that will record every episode of your favorite series even if the networks move it around the schedule like a hot potato. Tivo will even suggest and record programs it thinks you’ll like. I don’t want to start sounding like a Tivo press release, I have no connection to the company other than that of consumer, but thanks to Tivo I no longer have to worry about keeping up with BBC America’s constantly changing schedule, I can quickly search it days in advance and have it record individual episodes or complete series of both my favorite programs as well as new shows I might have otherwise missed. I won’t even mention how easy it’s become to manage my kid’s Pokemon, Sailor Moon and Tenchi Muyo addictions…

Thanks to Tivo I can watch new offerings such as Aristocrats and Jonathan Creek and the upcoming Royle Family without rearranging my schedule or messing about with my vcr’s primitive recording capabilities. Plus Tivo’s suggestions feature alerts me to other British shows airing all over the dial. I’ve only had it a short time and it’s already indispensable. Just as DVD will change your movie viewing habits a PVR will change your telly viewing habits. If any of this interests you take a trip out to your local electronics shop and demo a Tivo or Replay or Dishplayer and see for yourself
