Welcome to part two of my guide to UKTV Newsgroups. Last time I focused
on newsgroups devoted to British comedy. This article will focus on, Mystery,
Sci-fi, and Soap Opera related newsgroups.
Mysteries first! Actually there's not much out there dedicated to British Mysteries. alt.fan.inspector-morse doesn't get much message traffic but can occasionally be counted on for an interesting thread. alt.fan.holmes covers all aspects of the great detectives work from printed page to web page and everywhere in between and often deals with Jeremy Brett's acclaimed interpretation as seen in Granada's Sherlock Holmes series. alt.fan.rumpole is disappointing and usually empty. Don't be downhearted though, there are other newsgroups that might satisfy your hunger for Brit-mystery info and chat. rec.arts.tv.uk.misc is a catch-all group for UKTV topics not covered in any of the other rec.arts.tv.uk* groups. Recent discussion here has touched upon such series as Cracker and The Bill among others. Another more general newgroup is rec.arts.mystery. Recent threads have included messages about Hettie Wainthropp Investigates and Sherlock Holmes. And remember, if no one's posting messages in a topic you're interested in post one yourself. It's all go in Usenet! If it's action you crave, visit alt.tv.avengers where fans debate burning issues like Mrs.Peel vs. Xena (!) and other Avengers related stuff. Sci-Fi next! When you're talking British sci-fi telly you have to start with the all time classic Dr. Who, and Usenet is stuffed solid with fans doing just that. Start with rec.arts.drwho and rec.arts.drwho.info these two sites alone will fill your days and nights with all the Timelord trivia you can stand. With eight Doctors and countless adventures to discuss, not to mention the books, fiilms, comics, toys etc., the main newsgroup can become a bit unwieldy at times so you may want to dip your feet in the shallow end of the .info group first to read various announcements of interest to Whovians worldwide.. Other Dr.Who newsgroups include uk.media.tv.sf.drwho which may not be available on all news servers but which is a worthy discussion area in its own right, and alt.drwho.creative where fans concoct there own adventures in and out of the Dr. Who universe. Of course there's more to British sci-fi than Dr. Who and you'll find it being written about in uk.media.tv.sf.misc where the topics have included Blake's 7, UFO, Space 1999 and Jupiter Moon as well as many other non-UK shows like Star Trek. For those who like their sci-fi mixed with comedy there's alt.tv.red-dwarf where Red Dwarf fans exchange news, info and fan fiction. Last, but hardly least, Soaps! Soap fans have a wide choice of newsgroups dedicated to the most popular Go To Page: 1 2
