Coronation Street comes to America

British soap opera fans in North America will soon have another series to become addicted to thanks to the Canada's Trio network. Starting September 6th Trio, available in Canada and through Satellite provider DirecTV in the US, will begin broadcasting episodes of Coronation Street, arguably the best of all British soaps. Airing at 5PM and then again at midnight, Corrie, as it's fans affectionately refer to it, has been keeping British (and Australian and New Zealand and Canadian) viewers enthralled for nearly four decades and has enjoyed remarkable ratings success. How will Americans take to this newest offering from overseas? I predict they'll go ga-ga for it, especially if their idea of a British soap is the almost relentlessly depressing Eastenders, Corrie is a far more satisfying viewing experience, if traditionally a bit more conservative, than its younger rivals Eastenders and Brookside.

Below are listed a few of the better Coronation Street sites, but keep in mind that Trio will be initially showing episodes from back in 1994 and you might want to try to avoid any "spoilers" awaiting you at these sites.

While your tuned to Trio make sure you watch for other British gems such as the firehouse drama London's Burning and John Hannah in McCallum.

The first Semi-final in the Brit-Mystery Showdown is in the books and Inspector Morse was the runaway winner, earning a well deserved spot in the Finals. Be sure to help decide Morse's opponent by voting in the second Semi-final, accessible from the British Television @ Suite 101 Welcome page.
