And the winners are...The BAFTA's and the Battle of the Britcoms

BAFTA's

A couple of articles ago I made my picks for this years BAFTA TV awards. Well, the awards were presented a week or so ago so let's see how I did...

Best Actress:
British TV @ Suite101 Pick - Dame Thora Hird
and the winner was...Dame Thora Hird, Waiting For The Telegram
Yay! I'm 1 for 1 !

Best Actor:
British TV @ Suite101 Pick - A toughie! Timothy Spall in a squeaker!
and the winner was...Tom Courtenay, for A Rather English Marriage
A worthy choice, just not mine (1/2)

Light Entertainment Performance:
British TV @ Suite101 Pick - Billy Connolly
and the winner was...Michael Parkinson, for Parkinson
Well, he is a living legend. (1/3)

Comedy Performance:
British TV @ Suite101 Pick - The late Dermot Morgan . A pick both sentimental and deserving
and the winner was...Dermot Morgan, for Father Ted
The obvious choice. Morgan's Father Ted ranks as one of the greatest comic creations in telly history, alongside the likes of Basil Fawlty, Frank Spencer and Edmund Blackadder. (2/4)

Drama Series:
British TV @ Suite101 Pick - Jonathan Creek
and the winner was...Cops
Cops, currently showing on BBC America under the name Stanton Blues, has a lot to recommend it, though it does try a bit to hard, much like it's creators previous success This Life. Basically a combination Hill Street Blues, NYPD Blue and The Bill without heart and soul of what makes those series the classics they are. (2/5)

Drama Serial:
(British TV @ Suite101 Pick - Our Mutual Friend)
and the winner was...Our Mutual Friend
Back to .500 thanks to the evergreen Boz, a BBC programmers best friend. (3/6)

Soap:
(British TV @ Suite101 Pick - Eastenders)
and the winner was...EastEnders
A no-brainer, though how anyone can follow it regularly without an open line to a suicide crisis center is beyond me. (4/7)

Light Entertainment Programme or Series:
(British TV @ Suite101 Pick - Goodness Gracious Me)
and the winner was...Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?
Goodness Gracious Me is terrific but, to be perfectly candid, I haven't yet seen "...Millionaire" so I can't really say if GGM got robbed. (4/8)

Comedy Programme or Series:
(British TV @ Suite101 Pick - Father Ted)
and the winner was...Father Ted
A classic from its very first episode and undeservedly scarce here in the States (5/9).

Arts Programme or Series:
British TV @ Suite101 Pick - A toss up between the two Arena programs)
and the winner was...Arena: The Brian Epstein Story
You can't go wrong with the Arena series of documentaries, though since I couldn't choose between the two I'll only give myself half a right choice <g> (4.5/9)
