Ghostwatchhappen is hardly effective I did want to simulate the mindframe that many of the shows viewers were apparently in - that the show was real. The first thing I discovered was that anyone who thought the show was real must have missed the opening credits. Beyond that the acting and storyline were about what youd expect from a documentary of this sort which helped enhance the programs credibility. Ive long been a paranormal aficionado and was pleased to see Ghostwatch had done its research. The Early case bore many similarities to "real" poltergeist infestation (I say "real" since the honest truth is, though I love ghost stories, the overwhelmingly vast majority of these cases fall into three categories: Honest mistake, Delusion, and Fraud) and the inclusion of Red Dwarf funnyman Craig Charles was a bit of inspired casting that both mimicked and exploited the way producers use celebrities in inappropriate situations. The best part of Ghostwatch was that it was truly scary at times even when I was aware it was a fiction. I can certainly see how some confused soul might have been truly disturbed and terrified by the show which included a live call in during which many callers reported experiencing paranormal consequences from watching it. In the end, the rumors of mass hysteria and death by television were just that, though the media made much of it at the time and Ghostwatch remains a very effective telly chiller. In fact it ranks as one of the scariest TV shows Ive seen, right up there with some choice episodes of Hammer House of Horror and Lars von Triers Masterpiece of satirical horror, The Kingdom.
