Top Telly Sites / UKTV SotY 98

This week a review of some of my current favorite British TV sites and news of the upcoming 1998 UKTV Site of the Year voting.

Beeb Comedy Zone: Comedy Classics

The winning Comedy Zone puts a well deserved spotlight on a half dozen of the BBC's finast comedy programs. Here you'll find concise and informative pages dedicated to all-time greats Steptoe and Son, Yes Minister, Porridge, Whatever Happened to the Likely Lads, Morcambe and Wise, and the BBC Radio classic Round the Horne. Full of the sort of trivia that telly addicts adore and a small but select collection of representative sound and video clips, I can't recommend Beeb Comedy Classics enough.

The Comedy Zone also boasts fine areas for fans of such BBC offerings as the modern telly classic Men Behaving Badly, Reeves and Mortimer's anarchic celebrity game show Shooting Stars, Monty Python's Flying Circus (say no more!) and Torquay's finest hostelryFawlty Towers.

While you're surfing the Beeb make sure you stop by the fabulous new Tomorrow's World Plussite as well as X-Craetures dedicated to the BBC's controversial nature program probing the facts behind such X-Creatures as Bigfoot and the Loch Ness Monster.

TFI Friday Official Site

Chris Evans has emerged from his kooky DJ persona to become a budding media mogul but that doesn't mean he's left his loyal fans behind. Not content to just own Virgin Radio, he still hosts a morning show on it and continues his duties on TFI - to which this web site is a worthy companion.

TV Cream

Are you a telly anorak? If so, this is the site for you. If it's obscure, cultish, half-forgotten, then they know it well. From Ace of Wands and Adam Adamant Lives to A Very Perculiar Practice and Vicky the Viking with scores in between. One of the very best sites for hardcore telly fans.

The 1998 UKTV Site of the Year Awards

Now in it's third year, the UKTV SotY awards recognizes British Television-related web sites in a broad range of catagories. All types of sites are considered by award presenter Bigglethwaite's, home of the UKTV Site of the Week, from the top commercial sites to homemade fan sites and the final list of nominees is given to the web surfing public to decide who wins UKTV SotY.

Voters cast their ballots in such categories honouring the best Commercial, Comedy, Soap Opera, Mystery, Sci-fi/Fantasy, Youth and Anorak sites - to mention but a few. Voters are also asked to name their overall favorite site and those votes count towards the coveted Loyalty Awards. Previous winners include in 1996: 625Andrew Wiseman's Television
