Why does the devil have all the good tunes? The Edwardian era saw the beginnings of 'variety' in which famous actresses and actors such as Sarah Bernhardt and ballerinas like Anna Pavlova would perform as well as comic singers, animal acts, magicians, etc. This type of theatre had become so respectable that the first Royal Variety Performance was held in 1912 in front of George V and Queen Mary. These entertainments remained very popular until the Second World War but the advent of cinema and other forms of entertainment eventually led to the demise of the golden days of the English music hall.
