The Fabians and the British Empire, Part XIIIImperialism was an issue wrought with controversy the entire period with which this series deals, particularly among parties and political movements on the left. Invested at times with emotion, the debate within the Fabian Society was, above all else, about how society should be ordered, and brought up many questions including whether a "capitalist institution" such as the British Empire should be reformed or whether it - inherently evil and lacking the ability to be reformed - should be abolished outright. In some ways this debate is still with us. The British Empire may be long gone but modern day socialists and left-wingers are still debating how best to get to the New Jerusalem.
