Blow Up

Italian director, Michelangelo Antonioni, attempted to capture London during the swinging sixties in his first British film, Blow-Up.

The story concerns a carefree London fashion photographer (David Hemmings) who thinks he has accidentally uncovered some troubling goings after taking some pictures of a couple in a park. On developing his picture he is surprised to find what appears to be a man with a gun in the bushes and, in a later shot, a body. Mystery and intrigue follow. What happened? Did anything really happen at all?

The 1966 film - which also stars Vanessa Redgrave - deals with the differences between reality and imagination. To emphasise this difference it makes use throughout of unusual angle shots, sounds, and camera tricks. The clever use of techniques shows things that seem to be something they are not.
