Trainspotting

"Choose life. Choose a job. Choose a starter home. Choose dental insurance, leisure wear and matching luggage. Choose your future. But why would anyone want to do a thing like that?"

These are the words of Renton, the narrator of Trainspotting, a wild tale of the lives of a bunch of Edinburgh heroin addicts.

Based on the book by Scottish writer Irvine Welsh, the 1996 film proved to be a cult smash hit, due to its sharp dialogue (some might find the thick Scottish accents a bit too much to take), inventive direction, top soundtrack (from Lou Reed to banging techno) and excellent performances.

Trainspotting invites us to view the lives of class A junkie Mark Renton (Ewan McGregor) and his sleazy gang of low-life mates. There's Sick Boy (Johnny LeeMiller), Spud (Ewan Bremner), Tommy (Kevin McKidd) and the psychotic Begbie (Robert Carlyle).

Along the way, we take in a series of episodes involving crime, sex, AIDS, unemployment, violence, death, football and the reasons why being Scottish sucks.

The 1996 film Trainspotting was made by the same team (director Danny Boyle, producer Andrew MacDonald and writer John Hodge) that made Shallow Grave (1994) and were later to make A Life Less Ordinary (1997) and The Beach (2000).

Trainspotting remains the best film this British team have made though. Shocking, sickening, sad and hysterically funny, it's a classic tale of a dark side of youth culture.
