British Gangster Films

The Long Good Friday (1979)
Bob Hoskins plays a gangster who plans to develop London's Docklands area with the help of organised crime from overseas. The half-pint hard man soon sees his empire threatened with extinction after a number of disasters are inflicted on him by mysterious rivals. Hoskins gives a charismatic performance as Harold, who deals with his enemies by cutting them, beating them and even hanging them up on meat hooks.

The Krays (1990)
Real-life criminals Ronnie and Reggie Kray are the subject of this gritty biopic. The East End twins are convincingly played by Martin and Gary Kemp, former members of eighties pop group Spandau Ballet. Billie Whitelaw plays their mother and Steven Berkoff plays rival gang lord George Cornell. It's a fascinating account of the psychotic siblings' life of crime.
