Throughout the world, there are few organizations that advocate breastfeeding as strongly as the Infant Feeding Action Coalition (INFACT) of Canada. Founded in the 1970s, this organization is not affiliated with any government agencies and is a non-profit group. INFACT originally started in the U.S. and moved to Canada in hopes of getting the country to endorse the World Health Organization (WHO) code. They were successful, and now strive to promote and protect breastfeeding by using strong methods that are opening the eyes of many.
Some of the most publicized methods INFACT has used in the past come in the form of visual "advertisements" for breastfeeding. The posters and T-shirts put out a few years back caught the attention of many countries around the world and actually made national news in the U.S. Some considered these methods controversial, while most advocates for breastfeeding welcomed the candid images and statements. These wonderful eye-catching posters, including my personal favorite which holds an image of a child nursing and says: "Sometimes it's OK to suck up to the boss," are found in many lactation consultant offices, WIC centers in the U.S. and even pediatrician offices and hospitals. INFACT attempts to reach the general public and professional establishments with other promotional materials like stickers, cards, decals and table cards, including the one which reads, "You are welcome to breastfeed here: This establishment is mother/baby friendly." But INFACT is not just about great posters and T-shirts. They have been active participants in the Nestle boycott for many years. Nestle is in direct violation of the WHO code (by giving away free formula and actively trying to thwart breastfeeding mothers in many countries including Canada), and so INFACT attacks their morals and values with great gusto. Although Nestle sales may not be impacted by the twenty-plus industrialized countries who boycott their products, their marketing campaigns have been affected as well as their overall respect from the public. INFACT supports WHO, and is an active member and North American representative of the International Baby Food Action Network (IBFAN). Through newsletters, action kits for advocacy groups and individuals and network relations with other organizations such as La Leche League International (LLLI), INFACT is a great resource for information on what you can do in your community and government to help support breastfeeding. The INFACT web site holds information and articles on issues such as a woman's right to breastfeed in public, laws relating to breastfeeding issues such as the Human Rights Code in Canada, WHO marketing of breastmilk substitutes, and the Nestle boycott. There are links to other sites of advocacy and health issues relating to breastfeeding on their site as well. Go To Page: 1 2
