Why Breastfeed?

You may have heard the phrase "Breast is best," but do you know exactly what is meant by that? The formula companies have been doing a good job of making their product appear equivalent to, or close to, breastmilk. Unfortunately, that is simply not the case. Breastmilk is so incredibly superior to formula that there is just no argument. Except when you are physically unable to, the best choice is always to breastfeed your baby.

There are a wealth of benefits to the baby as a result of having been breastfed. The colostrum which is the baby's food for the first few days of life, is a powerful immune-boosting substance. Babies who are breastfed have fewer ear infections, are sick less, and even have been proven to have higher IQ levels! Less allergies, decreased risk of SIDS, and fewer cases of asthma are also benefits derived from being fed breastmilk instead of formula.

Mom also benefits from the breastfeeding relationship. Nursing after birth helps the uterus to contract, which helps prevent internal bleeding. Nursing also releases powerful hormones, called "mothering hormones," that help form a stronger bond with baby. They also help the new mother to relax. Research has proven that a woman who breastfeeds also has lower risk of breast cancer and ovarian cancer later in life.

Formula is just a mix of different ingredients designed to mimic human milk. The problem is, human milk is a living substance, and formula is not. You can't duplicate the life-giving properties of mother's milk.

Hello Shawna;
You have an interesting topic here. I know a bit about cows and if I may compare breastfed babies to cow-fed calves I can certainly say the calves fed by the cow always did better than ...
