Sunday September 25th marked the annual Susan G. Komen's Race for the Cure in New York City. A group of walkers/runners and "Proud in the Crowd" as those who register but choose to cheer on the sideline are called joined Team Stony Brook for our 3rd annual participation in this event.
The COO of Stony Brook University Hospital walks the 5k route with his 2 young children in a jogging stroller. From PhDs to nursing station clerks, everyone has a sense of camaraderie and accomplishment. Each team members pays a small registration fee and then solicits pledges/donations to raise funds for this internationally known breast cancer organization. Komen is the largest private non-profit funder of breast cancer research, awareness and community activities. Komen is based in Dallas, and founded by the sister of a breast cancer patient who died of her disease. Nancy Brinker, the founder, named the organization in honor of her sister, Susan G. Komen. Komen races take place throughout the country. The millions raised are a tribute to the dedication and passion of all those who participate and vow to make a difference. This is one of the most inspiring walks. The staff at the event, all volunteers, are super friendly. The route is gorgeous and inspiring. You begin at the entrance to Central Park and start off on the infamous Fifth Avenue in New York City under a huge arch of balloons. The path takes you past magnificent, old-school architecture and into the peace and beauty of Central Park. Of course, there are people cheering you all along the way. There are also water stations, pretzels, yogurt and other snacks to be had. There is a Survivor's Cafe and lots of goodies for the participants at the end of the race. Tee shirts, sweatshirts, pens, mugs, photos - lots to keep everyone happy. Team Stony Brook left the hospital in eastern Long Island at 6:30 AM to arrive in time for the kick-off at 8:30 AM. By 1 PM everyone was tired, but exhilarated and glad to be returning home in the vans with our drivers. The sense of friendship, advocacy and helping your fellow man is indescribable. Try it. You'll be hooked. Whether it is Komen, ACS, Y-Me or a local breast coalition, you CAN make a difference. http://www.komen.org Go To Page: 1
